UCCELLINA TOWER
| | Erected after 1321 when the Abati family fortified the entire monastery (1), a new level was later added to the tower, as visible by the surface of the building which becomes less squared in the higher part. I t is possible that this was a sixteenth century addition, as in that period many new towers were built in the area and many of the existing ones had been reactivated in order to form an uninterrupted chain of sighting buildings along the coast. From the aerial photo it is possible to see the internal space and the round; the covering surface might have been supported by the pillars, of which some traces are still recognizable, and might have had a pavilion shape, like in all the other similar buildings.
The small arched access door was situated above the basement, while above there were some harrow holes. Inside, the space was divided into the ground floor and four more levels. In the Leopold’s Land Registry ( Catasto leopoldino), which is kept in the Grosseto State Archives ( Archivio di Stato di Grosseto), the tower is registered at the section M of the Grosseto Community ( Comunita’ di Grosseto) under the heading 319. The planimetry, drawn up by the land-surveyor Antonio Banti, is dated the 11th February 1823. See references 1 N. Maioli, San Rabano ( Santa Maria Alborense). Chiesa, Monastero |
